A stayer is a bicycle racer who is able to 'stay' at high speed for long periods.
The word 'stayer' comes from the English verb 'to stay' and from the hippic sport. A 'stayer' is a horse which can run at high speed for a long time.
It has nothing to do with the standing position of the pacer as the German verb 'steherrennen' seems to suggest.
